Tomtom map updating

14 May

Aarghh, it seems that some recent purchasers do get free lifetime map upgrades – So, the GPS was connected, I pressed the buttons to update the map, but no..I got an error message saying that there wasn’t enough memory! I’m scouring the net trying to figure out how to get around this.Garmin is trying to push Garmin Express as THE program to manage your Gamin Zumo regarding updates, map updates and content control.Since the last few map updates Gamin Express has been messing up my Garmin Zumo 660: after the map update I get errors like “Can’t unlock maps” or ” Maps can’t be verified”.There are just two major map suppliers - Tele Atlas and Navteq and they have massive teams of people working on this.Drivers on all the major roads of Europe, people at computers assembling and adding changes - its a huge industry. Some other posts on the net start delving into removing or moving files off the GPS. One useful thing about the Nuvi is that the files inside it appear as a USB drive. And it found the weird address in Landsdale that my Dad was looking for.So I could see that it only had 33MB free of 250MB. I first copied ALL the files over to my laptop, and then progressed to deleting off Voice and Text files for languages that my Dad wouldn’t need and deleting off the example images in the JPEG folder. So, if you’re having problems updating maps – check out how much free space there is left in your GPS, take a backup (copy) of everything on there, clear out unnecessary files, and google “gmapprom.img” if you need to move the pre-loaded maps off.

Maybe something on their end is working better, or I now have a newer version of Garmin Express. My final solution was to move away from Garmin Express, and return to the old world of Garmin Lifetime Map Updater. With this old program on my i Mac all went as smooth as it always has gone; 1 update run was sufficient to get my Zumo 660 updated AND to get the map also installed on my i Mac for smooth use of Base Camp.Lets explain one thing from the start: There is no such thing as a "free map".Creating and updating maps takes a lot of people and an awful lot of time !
